Lexington Housing Studies is an organization of data-driven research and analysis of housing, property and neighborhood change in Lexington, Kentucky. We work with the Lexington Housing Justice Project and believe that there is a universal human need for and right to housing that is an affordable social entitlement rather than an expensive commodity. We aim to expose the root causes of housing injustice and to politicize people to exercise our collective right to make the city more equitable and democratic.
If you agree with our belief, then you may be interested in the Lexington Housing Justice Project, a group meeting monthly in Lexington. Some of the things we've been discussing include:
- Converting vacant properties owned by slumlords into permanently affordable housing.
- Organizing tenant associations that could fight for renters' rights, including improved housing conditions, rent freezes, and protection from evictions.
- Bringing more land and housing under public/social ownership in order to prevent the gentrification-induced displacement of poor residents from the working class neighborhoods where many black people live.
